Background on the Phase One April, 2022 archaeological dig:

  • This was a Phase One Archaeology project.  This is the most basic level of archaeology and is meant to assess the potential for resources that might be present in the project area. For our project, Dovetail Culture Resource Group was hired to dig 98 test pits in a grid pattern across the west lawn and then to reveal the foundation of the Portner Tower. Any artifacts recovered were cleaned by Dovetail and then returned to the Manassas Museum.
  • The report includes the methods used in the investigations, the general nature and extent of archaeological resources encountered during the survey, an analysis of all resources recorded during the fieldwork, and recommendations on the potential significance and integrity of the resources. If a Phase Two Archaeology project is begun, that would likely involve a more extensive investigation of the Portner Tower site.
  • For now, the tower foundation will remain covered to protect it, and staff will assess ways to share the finds from the dig.
  • Read the archeology report.
