Hiring Process

Police CarThe Department's recruitment and selection process supports the City of Manassas Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action plans. The Manassas City Police Department is a nationally accredited law enforcement agency by the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

Minimum Qualifications

Police officer candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:
  • must be a U.S. Citizen
  • must be 21 years of age upon completion of the Police Academy
  • must possess a High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
  • must process a valid driver's license 
  • must be in good health and physical condition as determined by a physician
  • must not have been convicted of any felony or serious misdemeanor
  • agree to no tobacco products policy during the course of employment
  • no use of illegal substances within the past three years

Selection Process

The selection process takes approximately four to six months to complete after the application has been received. The police academy will be held two times a year — typically starting in January or July. Applicants must successfully complete the following phases:

Phase 1:

  •  Complete Online Application / Supplemental Questionnaire
  • Physical Agility Test
  • Submission of a Personal History Statement
  • Preliminary Background Check and Processing

Phase 2:

  • Background Interview and Investigation
  • Video Based Test (Interpersonal Communication & Decision Making Test)

Phase 3:

  • Polygraph
  • Interview with Command Staff

Phase 4:

  • Conditional Job Offer
  • Psychological Exam
  • Medical Screening

Applicant Physical Agility Testing

The Manassas City Police Department requires all police officer applicants to successfully complete a physical agility test as part of the application process. It is administered after you have provided a completed medical examination form. Initially you'll be provided a description of a suspect to remember later. Then, starting in a seated position, you will be told to "Go" and your time begins.
  • jump over an obstacle 3 feet in length
  • vertical jump over a 5 foot obstacle
  • crawl under an obstacle
  • step test by climbing a step up/down 12 times
  • climb through a window
  • identify a suspect
  • drag a 150 pound dummy 5 yards
  • pull the trigger of a simulated firearm with your dominant and non-dominant hand
