This building was built by Caton Merchant in 1947. It was his first brick and mortar store named “Caton’s Firestone,” the forerunner to Merchant’s Tire And Auto, which grew into a . It had office space, a showroom, and a drive-in bay where mechanics would enter a pit under the car to service it. The business included a gas station on the corner next door. In 1953 Mr. Merchant moved the business across Center St. to a new building. He also opened a tire retread shop and gas station on the corner where the Harris pavilion currently stands. Edgar Rohr, whose “5 cent to $1 Store” was located next door, bought the building. Mr. Rohr opened his Toy Land and Baby Land here, which remained open until 1997, when Manassas Clay took over the building.
