What is Adopt a Street/Stream/Historic Site/Trail/Athletic Field?
As part of Keep Manassas Beautiful, volunteers can take on the responsibility of picking up litter at a specific location within the City of Manassas. Volunteer organizations are recognized by having their name on two (2) roadside signs provided by the City.
How soon after adoption will we see a Keep Manassas Beautiful Sign at my adopted location?
Your location will receive a Keep Manassas Beautiful sign with your name or the name of your group once we have received the first litter clean-up report.
Once the volunteers fill up the garbage bags, who picks them up?
If you have the ability to remove the bags and set them out with your trash, then they will be collected as part of regular service. If, however, you are unable to take the bags with you; please set them together in a easy to find spot and call (703) 257-8256. We will arrange to have them collected.
If someone is injured while participating in litter clean-up, who is responsible for their injuries?
Keep Manassas Beautiful is a volunteer program. Every applicant signs a waiver which state that each person participating in any cleanup activities or maintenance sessions related to the Keep Manassas Beautiful does so at his or her own risk, and the City of Manassas, its employees, agents, and officials shall not be responsible or liable for property damage or personal injury resulting from such participation. The applicant shall so advise all participants of the foregoing conditions.
Can I work alone?
Many Adopt a Street volunteers do work alone when they are collecting litter along the curb, but we do not recommend working alone in areas that may be isolated or when working in parks or near trails and water.
What if I only want to do a litter clean-up once or twice a year?
When an individual or group adopts a location, we ask for a commitment of a minimum 6 clean-ups per year. If your schedule does not allow for that, why not ask to join a group and help them on one of their clean-up days? It's a great way to meet your neighbors and you can still volunteer for the location that you like.
Can I adopt more than one location?
Of course! But each location will require a minimum of 6 litter clean-ups per year.
What if I don't report my activity?
Reporting your litter clean-up activity provides the documentation that proves you are keeping your adopted location litter free. The information that you provide also gives us the information that we need to keep track of how much litter is collected by volunteers in the City and helps us to identify litter problem spots, areas for program improvements and much more.
What's in it for me?
Great exercise, a clean and beautiful City, new friends - plus you get a vest, litter picker, gloves, trash bags, 2 cool signs at your location ... and an invitation to the City's Volunteer Reception where we honor our volunteers.
