Community Policing

The Manassas City Police Department is implementing a new policing practice known as Community Policing. This method of community-oriented policing is currently being practiced by police departments throughout the U.S. and has been used by the Manassas City Police in the Georgetown South neighborhood with great success for the last 10 years.

How Does Community Policing Work?
Community Policing strives to prevent problems in neighborhoods by involving residents in the identification of concerns and the problem-solving process. The police then work with members of the community to resolve identified problems. Community Policing strengthens ties among neighbors and police in a concerted effort to reduce crime and the fear of crime throughout the city. The Police Department's City-Wide Community Policing Plan assigns five neighborhood teams consisting of a:
  • Lieutenant
  • Sergeant
  • Five officers
  • Traffic Services officer
  • Detective
Another team of officers is assigned to all businesses throughout the city. The officers will make every effort to attend community functions occurring in your neighborhood such as Homeowners Association meetings, Neighborhood Watch meetings, school functions, and neighborhood block parties.

Duties
Your community policing officers will be conducting foot patrols, bicycle patrols, and other activities in the community to increase the visibility and accessibility of the department. Officers will also solicit your input for improving the quality of life in the City of Manassas.

Additional Information
If you have any questions or comments, or simply wish for an officer to visit your home, please contact the appropriate neighborhood team by phone or email. You can also view this page en Espanol.
